GOBIO has isolated and characterized a pluripotent stem cell line from the brain of carp based on our particular expertise in the endocrine control of reproduction in fish. In terms of their gene expression, these cells correspond to embryonic mammalian stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells.

We assume that the longevity, regenerative capacity and seasonal regeneration of the carp’s gonads are based on this cell type. This provides us with a highly innovative model for researching the biology of stem cells in vertebrates.
In collaboration with the University Hospital of Cologne (AG Prof. Hescheler /PD Dr. Kurt Pfannkuche), the cell line was transformed into a transgenic variant with stable histone 2B-associated GFP expression(KCBGFP DSM ACC 3285 Budapest Treaty). The stable constitutive heritable nuclear labeling of the cells in combination with the pluripotency status opens up completely new perspectives in stem cell / cancer research and in vitro toxicology.
