§11 TierSchG

According to Section 11 of the Animal Welfare Act (TierSchG), persons who handle animals commercially or privately on a large scale are obliged to obtain a certificate of competence regarding the necessary specialist knowledge and skills with regard to keeping, caring for and housing the animals.
Accordingly, only persons who have passed a competence test with an expert may keep, breed or care for vertebrate animals with an official permit. This is particularly the case if animals are handled commercially.

The GOBIO Institute for Aquatic Ecology and Applied Biology offers you a further training program in accordance with §11 TierSchG, which is designed to teach and deepen the theory and practice of keeping, caring for and housing pond and aquarium fish:

The theoretical and practical skills imparted by us in the seminar have so far proved to be an excellent basis for the training participants, both for the oral and written examinations conducted by us and for an expert discussion with the official veterinarian in accordance with § 11 TierSchG. If desired, this can be taken directly after the seminar in front of an examination board of the IHK Wiesbaden at our institute.

The training covers the following areas:

  • Legal bases (e.g. Animal Welfare Act, Animal Health Act)
  • Fish health (e.g. parasites, fish diseases, hygiene measures)
  • Water chemistry (e.g. nitrogen compounds, nitrification, oxygen, pH value, carbonate hardness, theory and measurements of various water parameters)
  • Biology of fish (e.g. anatomy, sensory organs, respiration, reproduction, nutrition, behavior)
  • Species of the most important pond and aquarium fish and some invertebrates
  • species-appropriate catching and packing of fish with practical exercises
  • Species protection, neobiota of aquatic ecosystems, biological invasions
  • Pond construction and pond management (e.g. pond types, husbandry techniques)
  • Communicating animal welfare issues to customers

The examination* covers the following areas:

  • Practical/oral examinations in the areas of water chemistry, species-appropriate catching and packaging of fish, fish anatomy, species-appropriate feeding of fish, customer advice, animal and species protection issues
  • Written exam with exam questions from all the areas mentioned
  • Final expert discussion before an examination board of the IHK Wiesbaden for the granting of expertise in accordance with §11 TierSchG
  • *The tests are carried out by experienced fisheries biologists and veterinarians. The level of knowledge of the training participants is objectively documented by the specialists.
